ICYMI: Legacy Giving Week Recap

Last week, we celebrated Legacy Giving Week at Starr King! When it comes to making a long-term impact on progressive theological education at Starr King, there are many giving options to choose from besides simply writing a check. We spent the week sharing information on our social media about different ways you can leave your legacy at Starr King:

IRA Rollover

Starr King School for the Ministry’s mission is more critical than ever. Anti-racism education, democratic values, and so many things we hold dear need a strong counter-oppressive defense. People of a liberal and liberating faith also need the pastoral care and hope our graduates provide.

As a loyal supporter of Starr King School for the Ministry, you may qualify to utilize a Qualified Charitable Distribution from your IRA to help us further this mission. If you do, you can move up to $100,000 from your IRA to a charitable organization such as Starr King School for the Ministry. IRA Rollover gifts that support one of our campaign pillars: sustainability, scholarships, faculty, and experiential learning also count towards our Sowing Seeds Campaign. Learn more.

Bequests

If you are interested in helping Starr King educate the next generation of Unitarian Universalist and multi-religious leaders, the simplest, most flexible, and most versatile way to ensure we can continue our work for years to come is a gift in your will or living trust, known as a charitable bequest. To include Starr King in your will or living trust, download our PDF of sample bequest language and customize it to your wishes. You can then provide this language to your attorney for inclusion in your will or living trust. Learn more.

Beneficiary Designation

Beneficiary designations are a quick and easy way to make a BIG difference! Just name Starr King School for the Ministry as a beneficiary to receive assets such as retirement plans and life insurance policies after you’re gone. You simply fill out a form that is entirely separate from your will—which makes this approach an easy way to give.

Not only is it an easy way to give, but it’s also flexible—you aren’t locked into the choices you make today. You can review and adjust beneficiary designations anytime you want. You can choose to make Starr King the sole beneficiary, the beneficiary of a specific percentage, or the contingent beneficiary after a spouse or other loved one. The funds realized from this legacy gift can be given as unrestricted or restricted for a specific purpose (scholarships, faculty support). You can also stipulate that the funds be held in our endowment and the proceeds from that investment be used for your chosen purpose. This means your legacy will last in perpetuity. Learn more.

Did you know that legacy gifts count towards Starr King’s Sowing Seeds Campaign goal of $9 million? Even if you’ve had the legacy gift in place for a while, if the school was not aware of it, that gift can count towards this campaign.
