The Magic Shoes

Author: Vanessa R. Fox

This book teaches children ages 11 and up a brief history of the Jewish people and of antisemitism. The Christian protagonist puts on a pair of magic shoes, which transport her and her Jewish classmate to pivotal times in Jewish history. The protagonist is introduced to Jewish cultural traditions, and she understands how other religious traditions, like hers, have similarities. Myths about the Jews are debunked. The moral of the story is that prejudice hurts everyone, and that we can each learn to accept and celebrate each other’s differences.
