Starr King School for the Ministry and the Chaplaincy Institute Announce an Affiliation Agreement

Dear Starr King Friend,

Seven years ago, conversations between Starr King School for the Ministry and The Chaplaincy Institute began about the possibility of an affiliation between the two schools. We were all so excited about the possibilities that could come from such an affiliation and we knew that it would mean lots of work in the initial stages.

After many meetings, and drafting of many versions of an affiliation agreement, the official signing took place on May 1, 2014, at the spring meeting of the SKSM Board of Trustees, with Dean Rev Lauren Van Ham signing on behalf of The Chaplaincy Institute and the Provost Ibrahim Farajajé, President Rebecca Parker, Dean Gabriella Lettini and Helio Fred Garcia, Chair of the SKSM Board, signing for SKSM.

This festal moment is the result of the mindful and heartful collaborative work between the two schools. In an era where chaplaincy is taking many new forms and in many different and new contexts, it is empowering to be engaged in the work of multireligious chaplaincies that can range from contemplative end-of-life care chaplaincies, queer youth chaplaincies to environmental chaplaincies. To be engaged in the work of preparing religious leaders who will be able to respond in a broad variety of religious traditions with respect and mindfulness is something that is a core value for both schools.

May our hearts rejoice in this new affiliation’s coming into presence in the world. Let the transformation begin, insha’allah!
