Take a Class as a Special Student

What is a Special Student?

Special Students are those students who take one or multiple classes at Starr King without being fully enrolled in one of our certificate or degree programs. If you successfully complete the class and decide to enroll in one of our certificate or degree programs, these Special Student courses will transfer.

*Admittance to courses is limited and on an as-available basis.

Special Student Registration

Please note: The registration procedures on this page are for Special Students who are NOT enrolled in a degree or certificate program at Starr King. These registration instructions apply to residential, immersion, intensive, and online courses.

Students enrolled in a degree program at Starr King School should follow the registration processes outlined by their school’s registrar. Starr King’s registration procedures are explained in the Student Handbook

For Starr King registration periods and other important dates: academic calendar.

Early registration is strongly recommended as many classes have limited enrollment and fill during early registration period. Please note: priority will be given to Starr King students.

Steps to Register for a Course (for students not matriculated in a SKSM degree program):

  1. Fill out and submit a Special Student SKSM Course Registration online form and pay the $25 non-refundable processing fee.
  2. SKSM Course Registration forms (and non-refundable processing fee) are due to the Registrar no later than last day of the general registration period. Please submit the Course Registration form and registration fee as soon as possible, as many courses fill up quickly. It is recommended to indicate an alternative on your Registration Form should the course you want not be available. Please note that some courses require consent of the instructor prior to a registration being finalized with priority given to Starr King students.
  3. Once your Course Registration has been received and you are enrolled, you will receive a Welcome Letter with login information to your new Populi and school email accounts. Then at the end of Late Registration period you will receive an invoice with payment instructions from our Student Accounts Office. Payment will be due on the last day of the late registration period.

The tuition for Special Students is the same as a Degree Student, though Special Students are not eligible for Financial Aid. Learn more about Tuition and Fees here.

If you are taking a course for the first time and have questions about accessing your course and using Populi, please review the Populi FAQ, Online Special Student FAQ, and the Populi 101 Guide for Students.
