Special Message, election of Rev. Kelly Flood

A Special Message

Dear Friends of Starr King,

I’m delighted to announce that Rev. Kelly Flood, Starr King’s Vice President for Advancement, was elected to the Kentucky House of Representatives on Tuesday by a landslide.

While serving as a State Legislator, Kelly will be continuing on Starr King’s staff, working full time on our fundraising goals. Most Representatives continue to hold down their full time jobs, since the Kentucky Legislature meets in session for two months every other year, and for one month on alternate years.

Kelly’s bid for a seat in the Kentucky legislature began this summer when she was asked by leaders of the Democratic Party to consider running for the seat vacated by a progressive Democrat. A long time community leader and activist in her home town of Lexington, Kentucky, Kelly was a natural for this. Before throwing her hat into the ring, she consulted with me and Tom Disrud, chair of Starr King’s Board. We offered her our whole-hearted support.

You can see Kelly’s position on the issues in Kentucky by going to her website, www.KellyFlood.com.

Kelly is one among several members of Starr King’s faculty and staff who work in a low-residence mode. She makes her home in Kentucky while working full-time for the school. We hold regular staff meetings by phone and do much of our administrative coordination by e-mail. She spends a few weeks in Berkeley every semester, while also traveling extensively to meet with donors and friends of the School. This mode of working enables Starr King to be a school of permeable walls, making its presence felt in fields of engagement beyond Berkeley.

Congratulations to the Honorable Kelly Flood!

In grace and gratitude,

Rebecca Parker
President and Professor of Theology
