Welcome to Matt Violet

Starr King School for the Ministry is proud to announce that Matt Violet will be serving as our new Communications Officer.

An Oakland native, Matt’s passion for diversity and social justice compelled him to study Communication and Sociology at the University of California, Davis. Since graduating, he has dedicated most of his career to empowering marginalized communities at home and abroad, including low-income youth of East Oakland and San Francisco’s Bayview/Hunters Point community.

Prior to joining Starr King, Matt spent a full year traveling through Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Vietnam, and Indonesia. While overseas he practiced sustainable farming techniques with Burmese refugee communities and participated in an intensive Vipassana meditation retreat at Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, one of Thailand’s most sacred temples.

With newly acquired perspective, Matt looks forward to contributing to Starr King’s mission of cultivating spiritually grounded, just and sustainable communities.
