Meet Our 2019-2020 St. Lawrence Scholars

Meg McGuire

Meg McGuire is a third year Master of Divinity student at Starr King School for the Ministry and a candidate for UU ministerial fellowship. She is grateful to be a lifelong Unitarian Universalist and has long been guided by her faith’s affirmation of the essentiality of all people and commitment to more fully realize our fundamental interdependence with all of life. Meg first responded to this call as a labor organizer, before pivoting toward the ministry, in search of deeper spiritual grounding and a more holistic toolbox.

While at Starr King, Meg has served as a Hilda Mason Teaching Fellow, designing and teaching a class about labor and spiritual leadership, and a student representative to the board of trustees. She finds her center watching the sun set over the bay with her partner and pup, sharing food with friends and spending time outside, ideally on a bike.

Matthew Waterman

Matthew Waterman is a third year Master of Divinity student at Starr King School for the Ministry as well as a Candidate for ministry with the Unitarian Universalist Association. During his time in seminary, Matthew has also taught religious education to youth in San Francisco, helping exemplify his UU values and beliefs while also sharing them with the future of our faith. Matthew came to seminary with a background in accounting, business, and finance; after having worked in banking and also governmental accounting. He is hoping to enter into congregational ministry and ultimately move into interim ministry.

Matthew is married and has four children in addition to two grandchildren, with one more on the way. In his free time, he enjoys the beautiful views of the Bay from the Oakland and Berkeley Hills with his family.
