A Tribute to The Rev. Dan Kane

Dan KaneDear Ones—

I am writing with the sad news of the death of The Rev. Dan Kane, a 2008 Starr King graduate, Acting President of the Starr King Graduates Association, and a member of our Board of Trustees as well as the First Unitarian Church of Oakland, CA. Dan died at home on Tuesday, October 6th, surrounded by his husband, Darin, and their three young children. He was taken ill this past July while on a post-General Assembly family trip.  At that time, doctors discovered an advanced brain cancer and, after surgery in Spokane, Dan returned home to Oakland and the loving embrace of his family and friends.

There is so much to say about Dan and the many gifts of love and service that he brought to Starr King, to the Oakland congregation and to all those whose lives he touched. In tribute to him, we offer this interview with Dan as a special edition of “I Am Starr King.”  We interviewed him earlier this year as part of our ongoing series.  If you didn’t have the pleasure of knowing him, perhaps this brief snapshot will give you a glimpse of his large and loving heart.  All of us here at the school offer our deepest sympathies to Darin, to his children Ella, Jack, and Max, and his many friends, classmates and colleagues.  He will be deeply missed.

Faithfully,
Rosemary
