Recap: Spring Orientation 2020

On Thursday, January 9, 2020, we welcomed the eight newest students to Starr King School for the Ministry during our Threshold Ceremony and Vespers Service. This marked our final Threshold Ceremony in our current building on Le Conte Avenue, which we’ve occupied for the past 78 years.

The next morning, our newest cohort had breakfast with some of our grads in town for the first Starr King Graduate Reunion & Mentorship Weekend (recap coming soon). Orientation continued throughout the day with discussions on building community; the Starr King mission, educational philosophy, and commitments; a catered lunch with grads; breakout groups divided by those on the Unitarian Universalist ordination track and those in the interfaith chaplaincy, multi-religious leadership, and Master of Arts in Social Change tracks; and a tour of Holy Hill and the Graduate Theological Union.

Our traditional Closing Ceremony and Anointing rounded out the busy day on Friday evening. During this ceremony, we remember and honor our ancestors and those who brought us there. We pray to the north, south, east, and west. The ceremony ended with our Dean of Faculty, Rev. Dr. Gabriella Lettini, blessing and anointing each person individually.
