John Buehrens is Senior Minister of the Unitarian Universalist Church of San Francisco. He has led congregations in Tennessee, Texas, New York City, Massachusetts, and was President of the UUA from 1993 to 2001. A graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Divinity School he is the author or co-author of five books on liberal religion and the recipient of three honorary degrees. Cited as “scholar, organizer, but above all, pastor,” he has taught courses in theology, history, and the practice of ministry at Harvard, Andover Newton, and Starr King, where he was full-time Visiting Professor of Ministry in 2001. He has mentored over thirty successful UU ministers. Married to the Rev. Gwen Langdoc Buehrens, a priest in the Episcopal Church, he has been a leader in interfaith cooperation for social justice, most recently as national co-chair of Freedom to Marry. He is also Vice Chair of the Board of the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee.
