Crystal Weston directs recruitment and marketing for Starr King School

Crystal Weston is a theological gardener: she likes to “grow people.” Crystal is Starr King’s newly hired Director of Recruiting and Marketing, and it will be her job to help attract more students – and a more diverse mix of students – to Starr King.

“One of my gifts is being able to connect with folk on many different levels,” says Crystal, who is originally from Brooklyn, N.Y. “Recruiting students for the next critical step in their life is very meaningful.”

Crystal says she will use social networking, streaming video and other web-based media to identify potential students. She’ll also strengthen ties with progressive spiritual communities, attending select social-activist conferences to meet face-to-face with students considering an advanced degree.

Most important to recruiting, she says, are the alumni, ministers, faculty, trustees, and current students. “Our most powerful recruitment tool will always be one-to-one encouragement from a trusted friend or colleague,” she says. “By sharing your experience of seminary, you can inspire others to explore the possibility of enrolling at Starr King.”

Crystal is the oldest of three children, and has lived in the Bay Area since 1994. She graduated from City College of NY and the Northeastern University School of Law.  She has worked in public service as a director of admissions (at Oakland School for the Arts), as director of training and development (at the Sexual Minority Alliance of Alameda County Youth Center), and as a legislative aide (to SF Supervisor Leslie Katz).

Crystal welcomes your comments, feedback, and leads on student prospects. Please email her at recruitment@sksm.edu.
