Associate Professor of Preaching and Worship
A.B. Trinity College
M.Div. Howard University School of Divinity
Ph.D. Student, Chicago Theological Seminary
Crawford joined the Starr King core faculty in fall
2005. In addition to helping lead the school's worship
life, she teaches courses in liberal religious liturgy,
race theory and ethnic studies, multi-cultural sacred
rhetoric, and preaching for individual, cultural and
institutional transformation.
As a national leader in movements for reproductive choice, racial and gender justice and sustainability, her particular expertise lies in the creation of mutual intelligibility across divisions of religion, class, culture and generation. Her background includes leadership positions with Bread for the World, the Women of Color Partnership of the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice, and the Massachusetts Welfare Rights Union. The Rev. Crawford was instrumental in the founding of the Urban Disciples, a collaborative project of liberal social justice ministries in partnership with the Unitarian Universalist Veatch Program.
A minister in fellowship with the Unitarian Universalist Association and the
United Church of Christ, Crawford served Unitarian Universalist congregations in the Roxbury community of Boston and the Capital Hill neighborhood in the District of Columbia. In 1996, Crawford co-founded Church of the Open Door, a Unitarian Universalist urban ministry serving more than 200 African American and immigrant families.
Crawford is completing a doctor of philosophy degree in Theology, Ethics and Culture at Chicago Theological Seminary, where she is developing post-modern approaches for liberal interpretations of sacred texts. Other scholarly interests include ethnic studies, post-colonial studies, Jewish intellectual history, biblical hermeneutics and Universalist hymnody.
